Job Description:
MECC is located in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. The community features quality medical and education facilities and diverse retail and recreation opportunities, while offering low crime rates and a low cost of living. The region is progressive in its economic resources, focusing on the development of a new economy in advanced manufacturing, technology, and adventure tourism. In addition, the College recognizes and celebrates the region's extraordinary cultural heritage, hosting an annual festival highlighting Appalachian traditions which draws visitation of more than 20,000 annually.

Mountain Empire Community College invites applications for adjunct instructors to teach in the Division of Arts and Sciences. Salary is based on the academic preparation and work experience of the applicant and is determined according to the VCCS Adjunct Pay Schedule. Programs offered under the Arts and Sciences Division include Chemistry, Biology, and Education to name a few.

Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom or online environment to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Adjunct faculty members are encouraged to pursue excellence in teaching across four areas: design, delivery, effectiveness, and expertise.

Job Duties
  • Teach all courses as assigned for the entire duration of scheduled instruction;
  • Be fully prepared with the course syllabus and instructional plans for each class session following the stated objectives of the course;
  • Enforce academic policies and procedures of the College and the department at all times, and comply with all other institutional rules and regulations pertinent to classroom instruction and general employment;
  • Be available during posted out-of-class hours to students requiring additional assistance;
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of competency-based education and utilize available educational resources for the assessment, improvement of instruction, and the development of teaching materials;
  • Take advantage of in-service training and other opportunities for continued professional development, including attendance at off-campus activities, as feasible and generally staying abreast of developments in the field of instruction;
  • As appropriate or as requested, participate in the program, departmental, divisional, and instructional meetings and other announced activities;
  • Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the program director and department dean in meeting the needs of the program, department, division, and the College.
Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum required qualifications:
  • Demonstrates potential in teaching effectiveness.
  • Master's in the teaching field or Master's with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field. (A minimum requirement for faculty teaching ESL and developmental courses at the instructor level is a baccalaureate degree related to the teaching field.)
  • Must demonstrate ability to deliver coursework electronically in an online environment and can utilize multiple teaching strategies as well as in-person instruction.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate technology into instruction.
