Job Description

Reporting to the Buildings Services Manager, the Moving Assistant is responsible for moving, hauling and storing various office items and equipment throughout the University, and will operate moving equipment such as trucks, forklifts, and hand operated tools. Disassembles and assembles furniture and/or equipment. This is a designated emergency personnel position and employee must report during emergency and inclement weather situations.

The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Required Qualifications

• Previous experience delivering and assembling furniture.
• Must have knowledge of moving and hauling practices.
• Must have valid drivers license with good driving record.
• Ability to operate large trucks (including commercial fork trucks), and other equipment used in moving.
• Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 100 pounds or more; maneuver materials up and down stairs; climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; and work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
• Ability to communicate effectively, have good team work skills, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
• Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
• May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
• This is a designated emergency personnel position and employee must report during emergency and inclement weather situations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience working with a moving company.
• Previous experience in university or large commercial setting.
