The UVA Cancer Center is seeking a Navigation and Outreach specialist to support cancer screening initiatives with community organizations, including Federally Qualified Health Centers. This position will work with internal and external partners to identify and address barriers to the early detection of cancer. The Navigation and Outreach Specialist serves as a critical link between UVA Cancer Center and other community health care systems, organizations and resources.

The Navigation Outreach Specialist’s general responsibilities include:
  • Identify barriers that may prevent individuals from receiving timely, high-quality cancer screening and identify potential solutions to those barriers.
  • Assist individuals to connect with available resources to address barriers to cancer screening (transportation, language, finances, understanding, etc.).
  • Ensure that referrals, procedures, communication, and follow-up for screening are timely through metrics and problem-solving while documenting all encounters appropriately.
  • Contact individuals to assist with follow up for cancer screening.
  • Implement culturally relevant cancer prevention, risk reduction, and cancer screening educational programs in alignment with the strategic vision of Community Outreach and Engagement and UVA Cancer Center.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to build capacity to address cancer burden; including assisting with community needs assessments, attending and coordinating community meetings, and providing bidirectional communication.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree required. Additional experience will be required in lieu of a degree.
Experience: Two years of experience required with a Bachelor's degree. Six years of experience required with a High School degree or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior work with patients in clinical settings.
Licensure in community or clinical field.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. Some travel may be required. Some weekend and evening hours will be required.
