Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Department of Neurology is to provide state of the art comprehensive patient centered neurological care for adults and children, perform translational and clinical research to further understanding of disease mechanisms and develop new treatments, and train the next generation of neurologists and clinical neuroscientists. Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Neurology is seeking candidates for an Open Rank (rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications) full-time faculty position in the Division of Neuro-Oncology. This position will serve as the Division Chair of Neuro-Oncology. The faculty member will provide patient care, engage in medical student and neurology resident and fellow education, and participate in clinical research.
Position Responsibilities:
Lead a multi-disciplinary neuro-oncology program
Direct patient care and clinical support functions, including clinical algorithms and pathways as well as providing oversight for program safety and quality
Oversee all aspects of neurological care of cancer patients, including management of neurological complications of cancer and its treatment
Identify and stimulate meritorious and fundable basic science-based and translational/clinical research in neurologic cancers, including multi-investigator grants
Recruit additional academic clinicians and translational and clinical investigators
Mentor and train investigators in laboratory-based and/or clinic based translational research of brain tumors.
Seek and establish research partnerships with other academic institutions, Pharma and Biotech to enhance the program’s translational goals
Secure an adequate portfolio of investigator-initiated and hybrid trials with industry partners, focused on the needs of patients in the cancer center’s catchment area
Enhance intra- and inter-programmatic interactions through the Massey Cancer Center
Sustain efforts in mentoring, training, advocacy, and outreach with a focus in Brain Tumors
Required Qualifications:
MD or MD/PhD degree (or equivalent)
Successful completion of a neurology residency and neuro-oncology fellowship at accredited institutions
Eligibility for licensure in Virginia and board certification or eligible in Neurology (ABPN) and Neuro-Oncology (UCNS)
Preferred Qualifications:
An outstanding clinician
Strong history of basic, translational, and/or clinical research demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and extramural grant funding
Nationally recognized leader in the field of Brain Tumor research and/or clinical practice
Demonstrated track record of active participation in multidisciplinary clinical programs focused on patient-centered care
Ability to thrive and lead in a growing, complex and matrixed environment
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus and cooperation among various stakeholders
Passion for Brain Tumor program development and research
A team builder who can mentor and direct others in research initiatives
