MAE Teaching Position in Aerospace Engineering
The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks candidates for a new open rank AGF teaching faculty position (non-tenure track), specializing in Aerospace Engineering in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE). Rank is dependent upon experience and qualifications. The candidate will join an outstanding faculty to help deliver and develop the aerospace engineering curriculum, advise undergraduate students, and collaborate with the other faculty throughout the School of Engineering and Applied Science to ensure that the University of Virginia continues to lead the field of engineering education. Working with other faculty in the MAE department, the new faculty would be expected to significantly contribute to several required aerospace engineering undergraduate courses. Courses of particular interest for this position include:
MAE 2030 Introduction to Aerospace Engineering
MAE 3010 Astronautics
MAE 3730 Flight Vehicle Dynamics
MAE 3820 Aerodynamics Laboratory
MAE 4120 Air Breathing Propulsion
MAE 4130 Rocket Propulsion
MAE 4650/4660 Aircraft Design I & II
MAE 4690/4700 Spacecraft Design I & II
In addition, the new faculty member would develop upper-level undergraduate (and perhaps graduate-level) elective courses in the faculty member’s area of expertise. The teaching load for the faculty member would follow MAE policy and would generally include about 5 courses per year. The faculty member would be encouraged to also work with the MAE Flight Simulator Laboratory and UVA aerial drone projects as well as to support extracurricular student activities related to the AE program, e.g., AIAA, Sigma Gamma Tau, Hoos Flying, etc. The start date would be Fall 2022 (ideally) or Spring or Fall 2023.
An ideal candidate should possess a PhD in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field. Candidates with extensive experience in aerospace engineering but not a terminal degree are also encouraged to apply and will be considered for the Professor of Practice rank. The position can be either full-time or part-time. Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated record of collaborative relationships across engineering faculty and students, especially in working with diverse populations.
