The University of Virginia seeks applicants for a tenure track (all levels) position in Civil and Environmental Engineering in the broad area of “energy transitions and the built environment.” The energy transition will impact infrastructure systems across a range of domains including water, energy, transportation and buildings. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute research and teaching in one of these (or related) areas: energy systems modeling, building energy systems, integrated modeling of infrastructure systems, cyber-physical systems and public interest technology. Preference will be given to candidates whose research considers the disproportionate impacts that environmental change is presenting on marginalized and under-represented groups and communities. These communities have long endured lower standards of environmental quality, which has contributed to lower human health outcomes. Making progress toward solutions to these complex problems requires engineers interested in working with communities, particularly those that have been historically marginalized lacking access to the research frontiers presented by modern engineering including ubiquitous computing, crowdsourcing, and cyber-physical systems.

This position is part of a multi-year cluster hire coordinated through the pan-university Environmental Resilience Institute (ERI, https://eri.virginia.edu ), where scholars work together to tackle persistent socio-ecological and environmental problems facing communities, regions, the nation and beyond. The successful candidate will be primarily affiliated with the Civil and Environmental Engineering program of the Department of Engineering Systems and Environment. Joint appointments in the School of Data Science or the School of Architecture are also possible. (For candidates interested in joint appointments, policies including for promotion and tenure are described here https://uvapolicy.virginia.edu/policy/PROV-029 .)

Candidates are invited to explore the Department’s website: https://engineering.virginia.edu/departments/engineering-systems-and-environment/research and consider how their expertise can complement existing interdisciplinary initiatives within our department and related schools, institutes, and labs (e.g., ERI, Link Lab, etc.). Applicants are asked to include a statement of their vision for contributing to the UVA community including any potential joint appointments or collaborations in their research statement or cover letter.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent by the time of appointment, a record of excellence in research (and/or design) as appropriate for the candidate's rank, a commitment to teaching excellence, and a commitment to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Tenured appointments require documented excellence in research and teaching, and an emerging national reputation. Successful applicants are expected to establish an internationally recognized research group. The successful applicant will have a track record of interdisciplinary work.

Please apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com and attach the following required applicant documents:

1. a cover letter, including a summary of research interests and accomplishments, and potential UVA collaborations

2. a detailed curriculum vitae

3. a statement of research experience and future plans

4. a statement of teaching philosophy

5. a statement describing demonstrated commitment or contributions to inclusive practices that create climates in which all stakeholders can achieve their maximum potential.

Please note that multiple documents can be uploaded in the link referenced above.

In addition to this position, senior PhD candidates are eligible and encouraged to consider the UVA Engineering Rising Scholars program, designed to encourage early-career scholars to pursue a career in academia by supporting their postdoctoral work before beginning a tenure-track position at the University of Virginia. Detailed information and application instructions are available at https://engineering.virginia.edu/rising-scholars-postdoctoral-program .

Applications received before November 15, 2022 will be given highest priority but the position will remain open until filled.

The University will perform background checks on all new faculty hires prior to making a final offer of employment.
