The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine invites applications for two tenure-track Open Rank faculty positions. Rank and tenure-status will be dependent upon qualifications. Researchers in the Department study a variety of neurological diseases and have specific interests in neurodegenerative diseases and the role of glia and immune processes in disease etiology. Building on the existing expertise we wish to expand:

(1) In the area of neuroinflammation and glia biology in neurodegenerative diseases including, Alzheimer disease, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Lewy-body dementia, frontal temporal dementia, or other neurodegenerative diseases.

(2) Studies on brain vasculature, regulation of cerebral blood flow, glia-neuron-vascular interactions and/or biology of the blood brain barrier including manipulations of BBB.

Successful applicants will have earned a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD, completed a minimum of three years of postdoctoral training, and demonstrated a track record of successful research with a strong potential of developing innovative research programs that can attract sustained extramural funding. A commitment to and evidence of an explicit commitment to diversity and of advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups are essential. The Department of Neuroscience is home of the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG), a center dedicated to understanding the contribution of the immune system to neurological disorders. The selected candidate will join a collaborative, inclusive, and dynamic group of investigators with similar research interests. Prospective faculty members can draw from an outstanding and diverse pool of graduate and MD/PhD students from the interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (BIMS) program to support their research program. Predoctoral training is also supported by several T32 supported training programs, including the BIG training program. The selected candidate will also enjoy access to unique shared research facilities in the Department which include high-resolution single- and multi-photon confocal and light sheet microscopy, flow cytometry, and behavioral equipment.

The University of Virginia is located east of the Blueridge Mountains of Virginia just 30 minutes from Shenandoah National Park and 100 miles south of Washington DC. Charlottesville is often voted one of the best places to live in the US, with a vibrant arts and music scene, pristine nature, local wineries and breweries, and tons of small-town charm. Competitive salary, space, and start-up packages will be provided.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
