The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) in the UVA School of Medicine and University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center (UVACCC) are jointly seeking applicants for tenured or tenure-eligible molecular cancer epidemiology faculty positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The successful faculty candidates will be appointed within PHS of the UVA School of Medicine to conduct molecular/genomic research that is relevant to cancer risk, etiology, outcomes and disparities. Candidates must have a proven track record of molecular/genomic epidemiology, cancer-related bioinformatics, or relevant epidemiological research in cancer prevention and control; a history of successful federally funded research in cancer, and a scholarly record of collaboration in multidisciplinary investigator teams.

The UVACCC is based in Charlottesville Virginia, and serves a large racially and ethnically diverse catchment area ranging from northern VA to Southern and Southwest VA, and includes areas in West Virginia. Throughout our 30+ years of existence, the UVACCC has continued to grow in excellence. We are the only Comprehensive Cancer Center in Virginia, and are listed in Becker’s 100 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs. These accolades are in recognition of our state-of-the-art multidisciplinary clinical teams and advancements through research in all major cancers. We attract patients from around Virginia, the U.S., and the world. The depth and breadth of the UVA Cancer Center’s research and service was recently recognized by the NCI with the award of comprehensive status (effective February 2022). This new faculty position will have full access to the Cancer Center’s shared research cores and our robust Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (OCOE) to support community collaborative research, and a competitive start-up package to support research planning and development. Over the last decade, the OCOE has built strong community partnerships with stakeholders which have resulted in numerous funded collaborations aimed at reducing cancer risk and improving the lives of cancer survivors in our region.

The Department of PHS offers a vibrant academic home with access to rich datasets and provides comprehensive and multi-disciplinary scientific and analytical services to the University of Virginia School of Medicine through its Divisions of Biomedical Informatics; Biostatistics; Translational Research and Applied Statistics; and Patient Outcomes, Policy and Epidemiologic Research. The Department offers two master degrees, an MS in Clinical Research and an MPH. Successful candidates will contribute to the design and implementation of the graduate education curriculum, teach intermediate and advanced graduate level methods courses, conduct research, and advance scholarship in their area of expertise.

Successful candidates will have a doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH or other doctoral degree) in Cancer Epidemiology, Molecular Genetic Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, or a related field, with evidence of innovative peer-reviewed research in molecular/genomic cancer epidemiology. Candidates are particularly sought who have the following achievements, consistent with their current or proposed faculty rank:
  • An exemplary record of peer-reviewed publications and federal funding relevant to cancer molecular/genomic epidemiology and etiology.
  • Success moving scientific discovery into new research directions and applications in patients and populations.
  • A collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork, change, and innovation.
  • Ability to pursue high standards related to one’s research, clinical investigations and service, and other areas of responsibility.
