This position will be located at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics (VIPBG) (www.vipbg.vcu.edu) VIPBG is world-renouned for its contributions to the genetic epidemiology of behavior and psychopathology. Its faculty and affiliates represent diverse disciplines including molecular genetics, psychology, epidemiology, and statistics.

Position Summary and Primary Responsibilites

This IT Senior Data Analyst is for an Open Mx Programmer. The primary aim of this position is to improve the code base of the OpenMx project, an open-source R package with a high-performance C++ computational kernel.

The Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics (VIPBG) of Virginia Commonwealth University is hiring a 1-year term programmer. VIPBG offers a rich multidisciplinary environment in software development for molecular and statistical genetics, epidemiology, psychology, and psychiatric applications. The primary aim of this position is to improve the code base of the OpenMx project, an open-source R package with a high-performance C++ computational kernel. We are seeking an experienced C++ developer with an interest in code development models and interfacing with cloud resources. Strong candidates will have excellent programming and familiarity with statistical analysis tools. Expertise in code profiling is preferred, but interested applicants are encouraged to apply regardless of past training experiences. The appointee will work full-time on the further development of OpenMx. The project will be overseen by a multidisciplinary team involving leaders in behavioral and statistical data sciences (Drs. Neale, Kirkpatrick, and Maes). The successful candidate will enjoy collaborating with the team, who meet for two hours each week.

OpenMx is a matrix-based R package that allows estimation of a wide variety of advanced multivariate statistical models. The software consists of a library of functions and optimizers that allow researchers to specify and fit structural equation models and many other statistical models to data. The OpenMx developer will work with the OpenMx core team to prepare the software to become a stand-alone application that does not require the R front end to use.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of software development experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Substantial expertise in C++
  • Outstanding work ethic and excellent attendance record.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the proven ability to multitask, troubleshoot and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or other science/technology related area is preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with R is preferred, but can be acquired on site if •necessary.
  • Experience working with cloud applications such as AWS would be advantageous.
