Ophthalmology Sr. Tech Position

This is a patient and team member focused role which is responsible and accountable for various aspects of clinic operations, specifically focused on in-basket pool management, managing protocol workflows for prescription refills and orders, pre-visit planning worksheets, patient consent, care coordination and function as liaison between clinic operations and access. Performs technical, administrative, and clinical functions related to specific areas of responsibility.

  • Answer patient calls and perform an extensive number of data collection functions as delegated by the physicians to allow for proper professional diagnosis of patients
  • Escalate calls based on diagnosis rubric
  • Make introductions and establish rapport with patients. Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.
  • Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assess extra ocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assess angles, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the physician including specialty tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, dry eye testing, and Exophthalmometry.
  • Perform Lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, Keratometry, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry (IOL Master).
  • Assist with fitting of contact lenses and instruct patients in care and insertion of lenses.
  • Support prior-authorizations and requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician, with full documentation in patient chart
  • Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre and post-operative instructions as directed by physician.
  • Check expiration date and inventory of medicines and replace as necessary.
  • Maintain inventory and order diagnostic medications and supplies.
  • Manage ambulatory protocol orders EPIC for assigned clinical team
  • Reconcile consents for surgery
  • Coordinator for pre-visit planning

  • Performs visual field testing
  • Performs ocular motility clinic area and equipment
  • Maintains a positive and professional work environment.
  • Maintains inventory and manages use of supplies and resources, as well as assess opportunities for good stewardship and cost effectiveness.
  • Investigates, documents and resolves problems and complaints in collaboration with manager.
  • Performs technical/clinical/administrative responsibilities in assigned work area. Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and contributes to and assists with the professional development of others. Ability to utilize train the trainer approaches with team members. Coordinates with staff, physicians, and manager daily clinic flow processes. Relationships with staff in other work areas are fostered to meet internal and external customer needs. Assists manager with contribution in team member performance review process. Assists manager in the hiring process with participation in the peer interview process.
  • Organizes the use and maintenance of the visual management system/huddle.
  • Coordinates with vendors and equipment delivery and installations.
  • Maintains competence in use of scheduling and web applications.
  • Demonstrates engagement in the work, team, and goals of the unit
  • Actions are supportive and meet or exceed patient/family/co-worker expectations by implementing the UTeam concept.
  • Accepts personal responsibility for role in patient satisfaction outcomes and demonstrates behaviors that promote improvement.

  • PAU) to ensure clinic needs are met.
  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service both for in-person and telephone activities.
  • Demonstrates ownership of own role in the customer experience and describes the impact their performance has on the overall patient satisfaction.
  • Prioritizes tasks to meet customer needs.
  • Updates and engages patients/family if there are delays with the patient’s experience as per department standards.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $19.49 - $30.21 Hourly

Additional Job Description


Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
Experience: 3 years relevant experience
Licensure: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) Certification by JCAHPO (Joint Commission of Accredited Health Professionals in Ophthalmology) or Certified as Contact Lens Technician or Registered Optician with the Commonwealth of Virginia required. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider or American Red Cross BLS certification required.


Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling: (distance: 50 feet), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
