Job Duties
The Science Museum of Virginia is looking for looking for a skilled, hands-on technician who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment to join our Facilities Department as a part-time Facilities Maintenance Technician.
In this vital role, you’ll help ensure the Science Museum’s campus stays safe, functional, and welcoming for all guests. You’ll be responsible for general maintenance and repairs across a variety of building systems—including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, access control, and carpentry. From basic troubleshooting to preventive maintenance, no two days are the same. You’ll also respond to operational or safety concerns and collaborate with other departments to support Museum events and programs.

Please note that this is a part-time position and hours will vary each week based on operations but no more than up to 29 hours a week on average with a maximum of 1500 hours in a 12-month period. No state benefits are provided. Interested candidates must apply at https://jobs.virginia.gov
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of general trades and the ability to assist in performing, repairing, and maintaining electrical, HVAC, plumbing, access control, and carpentry duties with minimal assistance or guidance. Demonstrated experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) along with the ability to effectively use tools related to maintenance trades. Must be able to read, write, understand, and communicate instructions clearly. Use of all required personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory. Candidates must be capable of balancing preventive maintenance schedules with urgent service needs and performing multiple tasks while occasionally upgrading skills to meet evolving facility maintenance requirements. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and move heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis. This role requires prolonged walking or standing, frequent bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching. A valid driver’s license is required. Must be available to work alternating weekends and holidays.
Additional Considerations
Electrical or other related trades certificate/license is a plus.
