Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the part-time position of Plumbing Steamfitter / Utility Plant Specialist II (T0189). The successful candidate will be responsible for the shift operation of the 101,400 lb./hour heating plant and distribution system to ensure the plant is operated safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all environmental rules and regulations. This position is considered emergency personnel, which requires the selected candidate to report to work or be called in due to inclement weather, an emergency, staff shortage, etc.

This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Perform routine equipment operating tasks; start-up and secure equipment promptly, and properly respond to changing load demand and fuel quality conditions
  • Assist with outages for maintenance and repairs of plant equipment
  • Determine required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques
  • Ability to follow industry standard practices and/or specific guidelines, particularly as they relate to safety, health, and environmental practices
  • Ability to work on elevated structures and in confined spaces
  • Notify and coordinate steam outages for the maintenance and repair of equipment and/or piping within the university
  • Maintain the cleanliness of utility tunnels, manholes, mechanical rooms, and work areas.
  • Perform welding and maintenance duties within the Heating Plant
  • Inspect all high-pressure, medium-pressure, and low-pressure steam systems and components for the purpose of ensuring safety, performing necessary repairs, and providing an ongoing program of preventative maintenance
  • Proficiently monitor steam and condensate controls using electronic and manual equipment
  • Perform welding and/or repairs on high-pressure and low-pressure steam, water, oil, and air piping; reseating and repairing valves; replacing gaskets; dismantling, repairing, and assembling equipment; the removal and replacement of parts; and assisting in the repair of general steam plant and campus-wide steam-related equipment
  • Respond to steam-related emergency situations during normal business hours or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns
  • Responsible for dumping ash trailers and wood debris trailers
  • Responsible for minor maintenance of the welding truck and inventory of welding-related tools and supplies
  • Other duties as assigned


Job Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Working knowledge of the design and function of utility-related equipment
  • Advanced knowledge and skill in the operation and maintenance/repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment
  • Advanced knowledge in monitoring, recording, sampling, and testing utilities while performing high safety practices
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be able, if necessary, to work extended or irregular hours
  • 6G welding certification preferred
  • Confined space certification preferred


Additional Information:
This is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary wage position in pay band 3. The anticipated pay range for this position is $17.00 - $25.00 per hour. Hours worked will vary based on need, but will be limited to an average of 29 hours per week and 1,500 hours maximum per work year. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits do not accompany this position.
