Job Duties

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental services support individuals by promoting recover, self-determination, and wellness in all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities: 8 behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or need substance use disorder services. DBHDS is committed to a life of possibilities for all Virginians. This position will work at SVMHI is a 72-bed, Joint Commission and CMS accredited inpatient psychiatric hospital operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).

The candidate will be responsible for performing physical and neurological examinations on newly admitted patients and taking care of sick calls. The candidate will order appropriate diagnostic workup, provide recommendations for outside consults, prescribe appropriate medication and treatment, and perform other related clinical duties as needed or requested by the Medical Director.

This position will work a weekend option (Saturday and Sunday). This position will provide vacation coverage on an intermittent basis.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will be licensed to practice as a Family or Adult/Geriatric Acute Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Hold current certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Nurse Practitioner.
Have an active RN license.
Have a Master’s degree or higher from a Nurse Practitioner program.
Hold a prescriptive authority for Nurse Practitioner in Virginia.

This position will also require:
Be CPR, First Aid, and BLS certified
Have leadership experience as a registered nurse or advanced practice nurse
Have working knowledge of assessment, diagnosis, treatment/planning
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, staff and other health care professionals
Ability to document findings accurately and thoroughly
Ability to recognize legal limits of practice
Experience obtaining and interpreting clinical data and draw satisfactory conclusions
Assess emergency situations and take appropriate actions
Ability to perform complete physical exams including pap smears
Ability to diagnose and treat common illness under supervision of physician
Obtain cultures as needed
Ability to communicate with mental health clients
Knowledge of medication and common side effects

Additional Considerations

Experience working as a Nurse Practitioner in a psychiatric healthcare facility, acute care, long-term or correctional setting.
Veterans and people with National Service.
