Calling all 17 ½ to 19-year-olds who want to become a Virginia State Trooper! The Virginia State Police (VSP) is hiring future State Troopers through our expanded Pathway to Trooper Program. This program is reserved for individuals who want to become a Trooper but are not old enough (applicants must be at least 21 years of age by their Trooper Basic Session graduation date). The VSP will hire qualified candidates, provide best-in-class training and experiences, and prepare you to become a Trooper.

Earn while you learn! The VSP has partnered with Southside Virginia Community College to provide you an associate degree in Administration of Justice to be awarded upon graduation from a future Trooper Basic Session. This associate degree program will be completed entirely online and time for your coursework completion will be provided to you while you work at VSP.

We are offering ten different program tracks for which applicants may apply. These tracks are open in Richmond, Culpeper, Lynchburg, Appomattox, Wytheville, Chesapeake, Salem, and Fairfax.



These tracks include:

-The Dispatcher Track – you will learn how to operate a multi-channel radio and a multi-line computerized telephone system; enter and retrieve information through Computer-aided Dispatch (CAD) terminal; and respond to inquiries and complaints. Opportunities in all divisions.
-The Strategic Planning and Research Analyst Track - you will learn how to research various topics through open-source internet and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Net, to learn how to develop white papers, create charts, graphs, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations to illustrate topics; to coordinate logistical needs of programs; assist in creating surveys and reviews/compiles survey responses using SurveyMonkey; and assist with analysis of Department’s Naloxone Program. Opportunities in North Chesterfield.
-The Safety Inspection Officer Track - you will learn how to conduct background investigations; document findings obtained in the interview and background investigation process by completing background investigation reports; and maintain crash analysis data for state-owned vehicle crashes. You will receive training on the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP). Opportunities in all divisions.
-The Equipment Repair Technician Track - you will learn how to inspect, diagnose, repair and service vehicles and calibrate speedometers; remove equipment from wrecked vehicles; equip new vehicles by installing electronic and digital communications equipment; interconnect cables and/or wires in accordance with the National Electrical Code; and basic electrical distribution and structured telecommunications wiring. -The Sex Offender Compliance Officer Track - you will learn how to conduct and complete home and employment verifications of registered sex offenders; update the Virginia Sex Offender Management System (VSOMS); utilize the Mobile Computer-aided Dispatch (CAD) system; and complete SP-236 forms as needed. -The Information Security Officer Track - you will learn how to monitor and manage security posture; provide security awareness training; investigate suspicious activities, contain, and prevent security-related incidents and suspicious activities within Information (IT) systems and networks; perform root cause analysis and write corrective action plans; provide risk assessments and evaluate infrastructure security controls using industry IT hardening guidelines and industry best practices; perform vulnerability assessments; perform audit and compliance support using the Commonwealth’s Security Standards; and develop, configure, and deploy System Information and Event Management (SIEM) tool for incident response, threat management. -The Information Security Analyst Track - you will learn how to provide information security auditing of events and incident management; develop, configure, and deploy System Information and Event Management (SIEM) tool for incident response, threat management, and alerting of incident and suspicious activities; ensure all systems off-load audit records to a different system every 30 days; analyze logs, network traffic, and data sources to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities; and review and analyze information system audit records and events using alerts and dashboards. -The Virginia Fusion Center Analyst Track - you will learn how to utilize analytical applications/programs, law enforcement databases, and software for tactical case support to include Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in support of threat analysis and criminal cases. You will develop skills to apply critical thinking to diverse information sets and to produce logic-based analysis and recommendations on probable and potential trends and event outcomes. -The Tactical Flight Officer Track - you will perform as a Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) in Department Aircraft under supervision of pilot in command (PIC) and operate mission systems to include FLIR sensors, searchlight, downlink, recorder, and tactical radio; communicate with PIC and ground units to bring assignments to a logical conclusion; complete initial and recurrent training on aircraft tactical mission systems and equipment; and assists as directed in the completion of aviation base duties. -Firearms Investigations Specialist Track – you will learn all state and federal laws that pertain to lawful purchase/possession of firearms; make prompt decisions to approve, deny, or research firearm purchases during the application process, when to initiate law enforcement activity and/or transmit immediate administrative message notification to State Police/local law enforcement agencies; bring research to a logical conclusion by retrieving, reviewing, and analyzing criminal records to determine prohibiting factors based on state and federal law; create a written record of research and results in the determination of lawful eligibility for persons to purchase firearms in the Criminal Information Verification System (CIVS); perform duties at gun shows events; initiate criminal investigations for Troopers during illegal attempts to purchase firearms; initiate firearms retrieval processes should a firearm be released to a prohibited person; and collect and remit monies associated with private sales transactions. In the Pathway to Trooper Program, you will be mentored by and learn from the dedicated employees of the best law enforcement agency in the country. Minimum Qualifications

•Follow written and oral instructions and implement proper procedures as required by law and Virginia State Police
(VSP) policies.
•Analyze situations and take appropriate action based on training and documented procedures.
•Perform program administrative duties such as compiling information and statistics, researching and analyzing
data, and filing.
•Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
•Organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks.
•Work independently and as a member of a team and establish and maintain effective working relationships with Agency employees and the general public.
•Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
•Safely operate a motor vehicle and use the in-vehicle radio and/or computer to answer and respond to calls.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
•Applicants must be at least 17 ½ - 19 years of age.
•Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license at the time of entering the Trooper Basic Session.
•Some tracks may require being able to work holidays, weekends, and rotating shifts.
•Some tracks may require obtaining Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certification, which requires either United States citizenship or to be a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.

Community College coursework is mandatory in the Pathway to Trooper program, as it is an integral part of the training program. Tuition will be reimbursed by VSP upon course completion with a passing grade of “C” or higher. Grants and financial aid options are widely available for those who are unable to afford the upfront cost of the courses. College advisors will be available to navigate through the enrollment and tuition process. Candidates with prior coursework from an accredited institution of higher learning may be eligible to transfer credits to this program, subject to review by Southside Virginia Community College. NOTE: This is an entry level appointment. The employee must continue to meet the minimum requirements
to be eligible for appointment as a future Trooper Trainee Candidate for a Basic School Session and/or continued
satisfactory performance of assigned work activities for continued employment.
