The mission of the Child and Adolescent Division is to improve the mental health of children and families through clinical care, research, education and public awareness. Children’s Hospital of Richmond, at Virginia Commonwealth University, has committed itself to transforming the Psychosocial Clinical Care and Research Program within Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation into a state-of-the-art program focused on excellence in clinical care, teaching, and clinical, translational, and basic research.
Chief Purpose of this position
The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a neuropsychologist, in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, to support the Hematology/Oncology division in the Department of Pediatrics. The neuropsychologist will support assessments of pediatric hematology/oncology patients and supporting psychological intervention services for patients, survivors, parents, and siblings. The neuropsychologist will provide graduate and fellowship supervision and training, work to enhance partnerships with Massey Cancer Center, and assist with clinical research.
Position Responsibilities
Teaching - Teaching responsibilities in the area of Pediatric Neuropsychology; providing guidance and mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students, clinical and counseling psychology doctoral students, psychology interns, and psychology fellows. There are also opportunities to mentor trainees from different disciplines (e.g., nursing, medical students and residents, hem/onc fellows, etc.).
Scholarship: Scholarly activities, including program evaluation, research, publications, presentations at national meetings, conference presentations, and participation in appropriate academic organizations.
Service: Serving on University, Health System, SoM, Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics committees, etc. to enhance and promote the service needs and policy making functions of the university, medical center, department, and division. This position will enhance partnerships between VCU Department of Psychology and Massey Cancer Center as it relates to pediatric/AYA neuropsychology and clinical trials that are focused on neuro-oncology and CNS-related diseases.
Clinical: Conducting neuropsychological assessments and providing clinical care services, including individual and family therapy, to a diverse patient population of pediatric and AYA patients diagnosed with oncology disorders, neuro-oncology disorders, sickle cell disease, blood disorders, cancer survivors, and those who are pre- or post-bone marrow, stem cell transplant, gene therapy, and CAR-t therapy. Developing new and innovative comprehensive assessment batteries for neuropsychology that can be delivered via in-person but also using a tele-assessment model.
Research: Collaboration with established researchers, including opportunities to participate in clinical trials through the Children’s Oncology Group, and well possibilities for developing investigator-initiated research studies, in their area of expertise.
Other (for instance administrative duties, etc.): Responsible for administrative duties relevant to specialty clinics as needed.
Required Qualifications
PhD or PsyD in Clinical Psychology, Child Clinical Psychology, School Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, or Pediatric
Neuropsychology from an APA/CPA-accredited doctoral program and internship
Postdoctoral training in Neuropsychology
Licensed or license-eligible as a Psychologist in the state of Virginia
Experience with clinical care and assessment of patients ages birth to adulthood
Experience with education of clinical and counseling doctoral students, interns, and fellows
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with advocacy at local, state, and national levels
Success in generating external support for research related activities.
