Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Pediatric Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.
Chief Purpose of this position: This position is an open rank, collateral, non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Pediatric Surgery. The faculty member should have clinical interests that complement and expand existing expertise in the Division. The faculty member will also support the division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Unique expertise in areas of pediatric surgery with complementary research is preferred. Ideally, should have either a history of external funding or potential for external funding.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Pediatric Surgery and applied anatomy and physiology.
Research This position will require the establishment of a successful research program in partnership with other disciplines which will lead to independent funding as an investigator.
Clinical Faculty will establish a successful clinical practice in the field of general pediatric surgery. Clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and affiliated community hospitals.
Other Faculty member will serve on departmental, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.
Required Qualifications:
Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery
Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery
Ability to work in a complex matrixed environment with a high emotional intelligence
Commitment to teaching and practice in an academic setting
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience teaching in an academic medical center
Academic goals towards external funding for research
