Job Description: Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Police Sergeant / Law Enforcement Officer II (00042) in the Department of Police & Public Safety. The successful candidate will provide supervision to police officers, with responsibility for duty assignments and monitoring work performance to ensure that all responsibilities are carried out effectively and in accordance with departmental standards. The Department of Police & Public Safety is an innovative and progressive unit that conducts and oversees all police and security functions for Longwood University's approximately 5,000 students, staff, and visitors. This position is considered emergency personnel, which requires the selected candidate to report to work or be called in due to inclement weather, in the case of an emergency, or staff shortage, etc. The position being filled is a midnight shift supervisor.
This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Serve as the first level of supervision, providing guidance and training to assigned police officers
- Apply community policing principles and practices to identify and resolve issues effectively
- Responsible for scheduling shifts, providing on-site supervision, and identifying training needs
- Responsible for the conduct of officers assigned while also ensuring officers follow all applicable constitutional safeguards, state statutes, local ordinances, university, and departmental policies
- Review and authorize reports and records, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with departmental standards
- Conduct individual patrols of the university by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot, and respond to calls within the service area
- Monitor subordinate officers' patrol efforts, ensuring officers are actively engaging while on duty
- Take command of emergency situations that may occur while senior supervisors are absent, maintaining control until properly relieved or when the situation is resolved
- Follow established emergency procedures at all times
- Evaluate and resolve complaints
- Investigate criminal and traffic incidents
- Exercise good judgement
- Effectively plan, organize, and coordinate events, manage shift assignments, and ensure adequate personnel coverage
- Maintain an accurate log of training records and requests
- Complete all assigned administrative tasks, such as performance evaluations, before the required due date
- Perform other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- All candidates must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Virginia driver's license prior to hire date
- Upon successful completion of field training, selected candidates must fulfill a two-year contractual service commitment
- Applicants must meet all Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services requirements to become a sworn law enforcement officer in Virginia. The selected candidate must be a U.S. Citizen. Preference will be given to applicants who are currently certified with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as a Law Enforcement Officer. Applicants with significant experience as a law enforcement officer at the state, federal, or military level may be considered, based upon their qualifications.
- Thorough knowledge of police science
- Demonstrated ability to develop incident action plans
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Previous supervisory experience preferred
- Prior campus and university experience preferred with strong working knowledge of FERPA, Title IX, and the Clery Act
Additional Information:This position is a full-time, classified, non-exempt position in a pay band 4, with a hiring range of $52,500 - $58,500. A successful fingerprint-based criminal background investigation is required, including a credit history check, medical evaluation, drug screening, and psychological and polygraph examinations.
