Job Duties

The Office of Governor Abigail Spanberger is seeking an organized, driven, collaborative, and hard-working team player to serve as a Policy Analyst. This position offers a unique opportunity to help advance the Governor’s policy agenda and support initiatives that improve the lives of Virginians across the Commonwealth. The Policy Analyst will manage a portfolio of issues including, but not limited to, public safety, criminal justice reform, and elections.

• Engage, meet, and build relationships with stakeholders, subject matter experts, advocacy organizations, and legislators to gather input and build productive working relationships.
• Prepare policy memos, reports, and other briefing materials for senior leadership and the Governor.
• Conduct policy research and analysis on assigned issue areas.
• Monitor state and federal legislative, regulatory, and policy developments in real-time relevant to assigned issue areas.
• Review and analyze proposed agency regulations and provide recommendations on regulatory design, execution, and impact to support effective policy and program implementation.
• Collaborate with secretariats, state agencies, and members of the Governor’s legislative, communications, and constituent services teams.
• Prepare and review materials for press events, announcements, and meetings.
• Track progress of the Administration’s policy goals and identify opportunities to improve outcomes and implementation.
• Translate complex policy issues into clear, concise, and actionable talking points, recommendations, and materials for external and internal audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

• At least 2-4 years of relevant professional experience in public policy development, analysis, research, or government advocacy.
• Strong analytical, research, writing and editing skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, diverse communities, and external stakeholders to build consensus.
• Ability to work well under pressure
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, prioritize and delegate work products to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrate judgement, professionalism, and discretion when handling sensitive matters.
• Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Additional Considerations

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working in local, state, or federal government, public policy, legislative affairs, or a related field.
• Familiarity with Virginia state government, the legislative process, and state budgeting practices
