The Xuewei Wang Lab in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is seeking skilled and motivated postdoctoral researchers to join our team in Richmond, VA. We have two open positions for candidates interested in contributing to innovative research on optical chemical sensors for ultra-small volumes of blood and drug-releasing formulations to enhance the biocompatibility of blood-contacting devices.

Successful candidates will work on pioneering projects in chemical sensor development and drug-release systems. Example projects include:

1. Developing a continuous blood monitor for critical care analytes through biphasic fluorescent sensing methods in droplet microfluidics. Key responsibilities will include organic synthesis and photophysical studies of fluorescent probes and recognition molecules.

2. Creating nanoformulations and hydrogels for the controlled release of nitric oxide, a potent anti-platelet and antimicrobial agent, to reduce infection and thrombosis risks in blood-contacting devices like catheters, implantable sensors, and microfluidic sensors.

Our lab is supported by multiple NIH, industry, and foundation grants. With expertise in chemical sensors, microfluidics, and microbiology, we collaborate extensively with medical, engineering, and cancer research experts. Our partnerships include animal studies with VCU’s medical school, drug delivery tests with the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, additive manufacturing with the engineering and physics departments, and commercialization efforts with leading medical device companies.

Our lab holds two granted U.S. patents and five pending U.S./PCT patents. We maintain active connections with pharmaceutical companies and healthcare communities to ensure our work's real-world impact. Dr. Wang is the recipient of VCU’s 2024 Outstanding Early Career Faculty Award. Our team was also selected for the inaugural VCU TechTransfer and Ventures Accelerator Program that support highly promising technologies for commercialization.

VCU is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as an “R1 Doctoral University - Highest Research Activity”. Its research funding has seen six consecutive years of record-breaking growth, reaching $506 million in 2024. VCU is ranked as a top 50 university in R&D expenditures among public institutions.
