The University of Virginia (UVA) seeks qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellowship focused on Compassionate Care. Since 2009, the UVA School of Nursing has been a pioneer in advancing the ideals and delivery of compassionate care within healthcare. We conceptualize Compassionate Care Research broadly to encompass research which aims to alleviate suffering by taking meaningful action to advance the well-being of patients, families, organizations, and communities, as well as the larger societal structures within which they operate. Candidates will join an interdisciplinary research team dedicated to high quality, high impact compassionate care scholarship.

This Post-Doctoral Fellowship position is designed for an emerging scholar committed to a research career and will support the candidate’s growth and trajectory as an independent scientist. The post-doc will be mentored by an existing NIH-funded Principal Investigator within the School of Nursing and team of interdisciplinary faculty and collaborators to support the work of advancing Compassionate Care Research. The candidate will have the opportunity to gain research experience working across a diverse portfolio of research projects. Candidates with research experience and interest in mixed methods; symptom science; data visualization; qualitative methods/ethnography; mobile health/remote health; rural health; health equity; and organizational/workplace culture are particularly of interest.

The candidate will have the opportunity for robust partnerships among UVA’s Schools of Nursing and Medicine, and the broader academic community. Candidates will receive guidance in developing and conducting research, and close mentoring in grant writing/proposal development, manuscript preparation and publication; supplemental funding opportunities may be available. The candidate will join a cohort of post-doctoral scholars at UVA and will have access to a wealth of resources within the SON, UVA Health, and the University at-large to support professional development activities and long-term career success (for example, see PhD Plus .) Though part of a large interdisciplinary research team, the post-doc research fellow must be able to work independently as well. The position will include the opportunity to co-direct students and will provide experience in supervising research that is valuable preparation for a faculty position.

Successful candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in a relevant field and demonstrate evidence of a developing program of research. Salary offered will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. This is a one-year appointment; however, appointments may be renewed for additional one-year increments (up to 3 years), contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance. The position will be full-time (12 months) with a negotiable start date. Initial hybrid and remote work options will be considered, with the expectation that the candidate will be on-site in Charlottesville at a later date.
