Description of the Job:
A postdoctoral position in bioinorganic chemistry is available for a skilled and enthusiastic chemist within the multidisciplinary Lucas Labs at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond ( https://chemistry.vcu.edu/people/faculty/lucas.html ). The principal research topic will be centered around the elucidation of bioinspired mechanisms, including the synthesis of tunable coordination complexes and/or metal peptides/proteins that activate natural oxidants and the mechanistic characterization of their reactivity profiles.
Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related discipline and prior experience with air-free synthetic procedures and handling techniques. Applications are sought from dedicated and hardworking candidates with expertise in the spectroscopic characterization of compounds and reaction pathways, including NMR, GCMS, FTIR, UV/vis, and EPR. Ideal candidates will have additional experience with specialized methodologies, such as resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopy or laser induced photochemical processes, but this is not necessarily required for a successful application.
The successful candidate will be expected to independently design, execute, and analyze experiments, to contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, and to promote a collegial and rigorous laboratory environment. Periodic technical progress reports will be required, and opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate students will be available. The initial appointment is for one year with a review after 6 months; renewal beyond 1 year is contingent on milestones achieved.
