One NIH funded research project seeks to examine a role for specialized extracellular matrix structures called perineuronal nets in the development of epilepsy. The second project is examining the contribution of focal ischemia to neuronal cell loss in Alzheimer disease. Both projects consider changes in glial neuronal interactions as important contributors to disease.
