The Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks multiple Postdoctoral Research Associates to work in the lab of Drs. Jianjie Ma and Chuanxi Cai, whose research focuses on cell and molecular physiology, regenerative medicine, cancer biology, muscle and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, geriatric medicine and Alzheimer’s disease, and therapeutic development.
Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
The successful candidate will:
Participate in planning, design, execution, and management of research projects in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory investigating cancer in the Department of Surgery
Participate in developing and implementing goals and objectives of studies
Design and execute complex laboratory experiments
Perform advanced molecular and cellular techniques
Collect, analyze, and interpret research data
Assist with development and implementation of new and/or revised research methodologies and techniques
Test experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods and make recommendations for utilization
Assist in establishment of controls, criteria, and research standards
Perform critical analysis of literature relevant to research being undertaken
Assist in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at national and conferences and workshops, and in the writing of project reports, articles, and other documents
Assist principal investigator in the preparation of proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of research
Coordinate laboratory activities and work assignments of research scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, and laboratory research staff
Oversee and coordinate periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment
Perform additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: PhD or MDin Biology or a related field.
This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. The position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A pre-employment health screening is required.
