The Opportunity:

The Dance Production Manager coordinates the planning and producing each performance season for the Department of Dance + Choreography. Responsibilities include season and production planning and coordination, in collaboration with the chair, faculty concert directors, and theater staff; providing technical direction, stage management, communication, and facilitation for all Dance productions; management of students as the core production crew; budgeting and fiscal oversight (in collaboration with fiscal administrator) of production budget and guest artist/special projects budgets.

The Dance Production Manager will have undergraduate teaching responsibilities in lighting design which includes a dance production workshop course and an elective course in lighting design, and/or other courses at the discretion of the department chair. Additional duties include support for a senior project course during the Fall and Spring semesters by contributing to class content, communications, and ensuring appropriate support for student work.

The Dance Production Manager is expected to provide leadership by mentoring students; guiding students, faculty, and guest artists on lighting and production procedures in the pursuit of their creative work; promoting methods to utilize and grow production facilities and other assets in support of research and teaching; and demonstrating through teaching, mentoring, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience, integrating multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and professional practice tools.

Required Qualifications
  • Appropriate professional experience in technical theater and lighting design.
  • MFA preferred, and/or 5+ years in professional training and experience.
  • Knowledge of all procedures connected with technical direction of dance and theatrical
    productions.
  • Demonstrated ability to design lights for dance, and knowledge of dance as an art form.
  • Experience teaching on an undergraduate level.
  • Interest and experience in working with students, running student crews, and training student crews.
  • Stage Management skills.
  • Communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting/fiscal oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate.
  • Ability to create and execute technical production schedules involving many elements and many people.
  • Ability to set up, run and maintain theater/video/sound/lighting equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
