Job Description

The Department of Management in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech seeks applications for one tenure-track full professor position in Organizational Behavior/Human Resources to begin August 2023. We are interested in candidates who are full or senior associate professors at top research institutions. The potential for an endowed professorship exists for a candidate with very strong research credentials. Ideal applicants will have demonstrated abilities in research, mentorship, and program building and who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts of the Pamplin College of Business community. The Department of Management, Pamplin College of Business, and Virginia Tech:
The Department of Management consists of 30 full-time faculty with an impressive range of leading-edge research and teaching expertise in the field of management. Our current faculty (Jeffrey B. Arthur, Kiran Awate, Daniel J. Beal, William J. Becker, Cynthia E. Devers, Devi R. Gnyawali, Donald Hatfield, Richard A. Hunt, Ayenda Kemp, Pankaj Kumar, Trey Lewis, Karen Schnatterly, Max Stallkamp, Phil Thompson, David M. Townsend, Beverly Tyler, A.K. Ward Bartlett) publish in top journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Academy of Management Annals, and others.

The Department of Management offers a PhD in Business Administration with a major in Management. Many of our recent doctoral students have had papers accepted in top journals before they entered the job market. Therefore, actively training and working with PhD students is expected of the individual chosen to fill the position.

Recent accolades received by the Department of Management and its research and instructional programs include # 25 ranking in the Princeton Review's list of top undergraduate programs in entrepreneurship and the USASBE Model Program Award recognizing excellence in entrepreneurship education.

The Pamplin College of Business offers majors in management, accounting and information systems, business information technology, finance, hospitality and tourism management, and marketing. The Department of Management is an active contributor to many of the college’s programs such as the part-time MBA, EMBA, online MBA programs; the Master of Information Technology program; and the Executive Ph.D. program. Several programs are conducted in the Northern Virginia/metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. In addition, Virginia Tech's $1B+ Innovation Campus in Northern Virginia (https://vt.edu/innovationcampus/index.html) is a key part of a long-term strategy to build world-class research and educational programs in technology entrepreneurship and innovation in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cybersecurity (https://vt.edu/cciblueprint/index.html). These initiatives are supported by a growing number of public/private partnerships sponsored by Virginia Tech, the Commonwealth of Virginia, high growth startups, and leading global companies.

The Pamplin College of Business is also partnering with the College of Engineering and College of Science to construct a four-building Global Business and Analytics Complex. The first building is scheduled for completion in 2023 (https://vtx.vt.edu/articles/2021/03/gbac-groundbreaking.html).

Blacksburg, Virginia:
Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia and is home to over 30,000 students. Blacksburg is in the New River Valley (NRV) near the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Trail. Blacksburg possesses high-quality schools (K-12), a relatively low cost of living, a temperate climate, numerous outdoor activities, and is ranked one of the top places in the U.S. to raise children. Blacksburg’s population is 44,000 with the greater Blacksburg area (Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford) having a combined population of 120,000. Nearby Roanoke (population 100,000+) is located 30 minutes from Blacksburg and is home to the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport. Blacksburg is conveniently located 265 miles from Washington, D.C., 200 miles from the Research Triangle Region of North Carolina, 160 miles from Charlotte, N.C., 246 miles from Virginia Beach, and 400 miles from Atlanta.

Required Qualifications

Qualified candidates should possess: (1) a doctorate in Management or a closely related field from an AACSB/EQUIS or similarly accredited school by appointment start date; (2) a strong program of scholarly research with recent publications in elite management journals and evidence of working with and mentoring doctoral students and junior faculty; (3) interest in continuing to conduct research having a high probability of publication in top-quality journals (4) instructional capabilities at the undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral levels; and (5) the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts of the college and university. Occasional travel to attend professional conferences and meetings is expected. A criminal background check will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have: (1) experience as a mentor to junior faculty and doctoral students, (2) overlap of research interests with those of our current faculty in the micro areas, and (3) demonstrated teaching effectiveness at masters and Ph.D. levels.
