Job Description:
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Program Assistant – Computer Science is a new position funded by TCC’s Tech Talent Investment Pipeline (TTIP) grant. This recurring grant until 2039 was created to increase the number of Computer Science and related transfer majors at VCCS colleges and to increase their successful transfer to senior institutions with the overall goal of providing more Bachelor and Master’s degree graduates for the Commonwealth in Computer Science and related IT and engineering fields. This position at TCC serves to both increase the number of students enrolled in our transfer Computer Science program and to increase the successful transfer of those program graduates to colleges and universities in Virginia.

Reporting directly to the Pathway Dean for Business, Computer Science & IT, the position works collaboratively with the Dean, faculty, and students in the Computer Science program. The position not only focuses on providing support and enrichment activities for existing Computer Science students but also helps to promote, recruit, and build a pipeline from the public schools to this high wage career field.

Identify and interpret transfer admissions policies for Computer Science graduates at Virginia colleges and universities to ensure seamless transition to the undergraduate upper level.

Develop materials that assist prospective students in understanding career potential, labor market demands, and employability in the Computer Science field.

Create databases and matriculation details so that annual assessments can be made to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of functional areas and align the assessment plan with the college’s overall enrollment management and program assessment plans.

Provide regular communication to the Dean for areas of responsibility to enable sharing of best practices and consistency of procedures.

On a regular basis, review and update brochures, web-based content and other communications related to Computer Science.

Build effective working relationships and work collaboratively with other administrators, staff, and faculty in planning and implementing services that increase student recruitment, admission, enrollment, and graduation of Computer Science students.

Coordinate with the college’s high school outreach efforts and ensure that college employees, high school faculty and staff, and high school students and their families understand the services and opportunities provided by the Computer Science program at TCC.

Co-sponsor/supervise any student clubs related to Computer Science at the campuses.

Develop and deliver out of the classroom enhancement activities in collaboration with the faculty and Dean that will support and enrich student experiences at TCC.

Foster college-wide support, communication, and collaboration in all functional areas that support Computer Science.

Perform other duties related to Computer Science as assigned by the Pathway Dean.
