Job Description

The Department of Human Development and Family Science (www.hdfs.vt.edu), in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (www.liberalarts.vt.edu) at Virginia Tech, invites applications for the position of Associate Professor and Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Doctoral Program (www.familytherapy.vt.edu) in Blacksburg, VA. This is a 12-month full-time position. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.

Candidates for the position should be at the rank of Associate Professor and have a record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, advising, and professional engagement. The ideal program director is a dynamic and engaged leader with the administrative and interpersonal skills necessary to guide an energetic and diverse group of faculty, staff, and students committed to a scholar-practitioner focus. Candidates should also have the clinical and supervisory experience necessary to effectively train doctoral students from a variety of backgrounds. Responsibilities include the following:

▪ Program Management:
o Advocate for the MFT program and guide program development and growth
o Coordinate graduate recruitment and admissions
o Provide oversight of the operations of the Family Therapy Center of Virginia Tech
o Oversee COAMFTE accreditation
o Manage program fiscal and facility resources
o Collaborate with the Family Therapy Center Clinical Director and department administration
▪ Teaching and Research Portfolio:
o Teach MFT and departmental undergraduate and graduate courses, with the teaching load for this position being three courses during the academic year plus a 6-week summer practicum,
o Advise doctoral students
o Maintain a robust externally funded research portfolio and empirically-based publication record
▪ University and Professional service

Required Qualifications

▪ Earned doctorate in marriage and family therapy or a closely related clinical field at the time of appointment
▪ Exemplary record of teaching, mentoring, nationally recognized scholarship, extramural funding, and engagement in professional service commensurate with appointment as an Associate Professor at Virginia Tech
▪ American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) designation as an Approved Supervisor

Preferred Qualifications

▪ Previous administrative experience
▪ A full, current, and unrestricted MFT license to independently practice marriage and family therapy in the U.S.
▪ Eligibility for MFT licensure in Virginia
▪ Familiarity with COAMFTE accreditation

About the Marriage and Family Therapy Program
The mission of the MFT doctoral program is to develop scholar-practitioners who demonstrate respect for diversity and inclusion and will advance the field of MFT through research, clinical supervision, teaching, clinical practice, and community and professional engagement. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). The Family Therapy Center of Virginia Tech, which serves as the training clinic for the MFT program, provides low-cost, high-quality therapy to area residents and the Virginia Tech community. The mission of the Department of Human Development and Family Science is to understand and improve the lives of people of all ages in relationships, families, organizations, and communities through education, research, and engagement. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Human Development and Childhood Pre-Education. These programs have a strong commitment to engaged, experiential learning through field studies and service learning. The doctoral program includes specialization in Adult Development and Aging, Child and Adolescent Development, Family Science, and Marriage and Family Therapy.
