Applicants hired into this position who are not currently VA state government employees are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus upon hire with signature of a 12-month agreement.
Applicants hired into this position who are currently working for VA state government are eligible for a $5,000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with signature of an agreement for an additional 12-months of service.
Classified Applicants hired into this position who are already working in VSP’s Firearms Transaction Center (Dept 041000), or Dispatcher function are not eligible for either a sign-on bonus upon hire or a retention bonus after 10 months.
About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Program Support Technician Senior in our Criminal Justice Information Services Division at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The successful candidate will retrieve, review, and analyze criminal records and other documents to independently determine if there are prohibiting factors that prevent potential gun buyers or other recipients of firearms from purchasing or possessing firearms; approve or deny firearm purchases requests; inform law enforcement on any outstanding warrants of arrest, and/or determine when to transmit immediate administrative message notification(s) to state and local law enforcement agencies of attempts to purchase firearms in circumstances involving protective orders or mental health records; and document research results that support federal disqualification to the possession or transportation of a firearm(s) by inclusion of disqualifying data sets as noted in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

Minimum Qualifications
•Skill in operating computers and using Microsoft Office (MS) applications. •Demonstrated ability apply policies and procedures; to apply research and analytical methodology in the interpretation of criminal arrest and disposition information; to write and communicate effectively in English; and to respond to inquiries from the public. •High School Diploma or GED equivalent. •Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified, which requires either being a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
Additional Considerations
•Some knowledge or familiarity with accessing and retrieving data from state and federal criminal history databases including Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) preferred. •Criminal Justice experience preferred.
