Mission or Goal of Unit: The goal of the department of radiation oncology is to provide the highest possible quality of patient care, while advancing knowledge through cutting edge research and training the next generation of practitioners in the field.
Chief Purpose of this position: We are seeking a board eligible or board-certified radiation oncologist to advance the patient care, research and teaching missions through direct patient care in the clinic, the conduct of clinical research and training of residents, medical students and other trainees.
Position Responsibilities:
Clinical: Primary radiation oncologist at our Hanover Medical Park satellite facility providing consultative and external beam radiotherapy treatment services.
Teaching: Time and effort [~5%] shall be devoted to teaching and teaching-related activities. (This will primarily include radiation oncology residents but could extend to medical students, dental students, graduate students, allied health students, fellows, and colleagues where appropriate. Teaching responsibilities also shall be considered to include preparation of instructional materials, evaluative materials, testing and maintenance of personal professional skills through continuing education, advising and mentoring trainees, and participation in academic reinforcement programs.) Research: Time and effort [15%] shall be devoted to research-related activities. The primary responsibility of the candidate will be active participation in clinical research through enrollment of patients on clinical trials. The candidate will be encouraged to be involved with additional activities to include clinical trial design and participation in national cooperative research organizations to further the mission of the Massey Cancer. Collaborative activities with laboratory scientists, both inside and outside the institution, leading to translational research projects are also encouraged. Obtaining extramural support for clinical research through industry or other funding agencies is strongly encouraged.
Service: Time and effort [80%] shall be devoted to the provision of clinical services. The candidate is expected to maintain a broad general radiation oncology practice and proficiency in external beam radiotherapy techniques. Active participation in the multidisciplinary tumor boards is expected. The candidate is expected to integrate students and residents into this service on an intermittent basis. The candidate will be provided the necessary space (clinical and office), clerical and nursing support to carry out all duties.
Other: (for instance administrative duties, etc.) Time and effort shall be devoted to academic service-related activities. This shall include college, school, and departmental committee work, professional growth, and other such assignments.
Required Qualifications: MD or DO degree or equivalent and board certification or eligibility or its equivalent. Demonstration of a strong commitment to clinical and translational research. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications: Teaching experience at the resident and medical student level. Demonstrated track record of productivity in clinical and translational research. Demonstration of a strong commitment to clinical and translational research.
