Radiation Safety Specialist

Position Summary/Overview:

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) partners with the VCU community to promote and facilitate a positive, campus-wide attitude of safety excellence and environmental stewardship to protect university assets and reduce risks. The primary mission of Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Health & Safety is to advance and support a safe and healthy environment at VCU and VCU Health. This work is accomplished through surveys, consultation, teaching, advising, auditing and environmental monitoring. As the University liaison for safety and compliance, we work with outside agencies and organizations to address all applicable standards.

The Radiation Safety Specialist plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the university and VCU Health System maintain compliance with state and federal requirements that apply to research and medical applications of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices. The incumbent will perform duties required by VCU’s radiation safety programs to meet all Federal, State and University regulations and policies including but not limited to dosimetry, radiation safety surveys and inspections, X-ray audits. This individual will work closely with VCU Health team members to maintain and improve the dosimetry program as well as coordinate emergency preparedness exercises. The candidate will assist in developing training for university and health system clients.
