Location: This position is onsite at 630 Peter Jefferson Pkwy, Charlottesville, VA

This position is a wage position and is limited to 29 hours per week with no benefits, not to exceed 1500 hours per year. This is not a remote position. This position is onsite at the identified regional office.

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority, Bureau of Law Enforcement seeks to hire a part-time Regional Evidence Custodian to provide support to multiple regional offices. The successful candidate is required to live within the geographic assigned region.

Essential Functions

  • Duties include receiving, preserving, recording, storing, securing, and releasing items of physical evidence; transporting evidence to and from regional offices and temporary field evidence storage facilities, maintaining accurate chain of custody and disposition records.
  • Submits items of evidence to and the state forensic laboratory when required and performs other necessary duties related to the maintenance and security of the regional evidence room.
  • Testifies in court regarding the chain of custody and handling of evidence, ensures proper handling of evidence, and performs related duties as required.
  • This person will be required to do extensive travel in a state vehicle to the (Staunton Regional Office, Charlottesville Regional Office and Lynchburg Regional Office) offices’ remote distance lockers to collect / prepare and store evidence that law enforcement agents collect in the field.
  • The position will also oversee AED / fire extinguisher maintenance logs.
  • Assist with spare regional vehicle maintenance.
  • Potentially investigate low level banquet applications.
  • The position may perform other administrative duties as assigned within the regional offices.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualified applicants should have considerable knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations and agency policies relative to evidence storage and processing.
  • Experience using personal computers and various software applications is needed along with the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with Bureau management and supervisors, other Law Enforcement agencies and the general public.
  • Experience performing data entry and preparing investigative reports and presenting the contents verbally is also required as well as the ability to exercise independent judgment, work independently, maintain confidentiality, handle stressful situations, compile and analyze pertinent information, and distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information to arrive at logical conclusions.
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills are paramount.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED


Additional Requirements:

  • This position is a wage position and is limited to 29 hours per week with no benefits, not to exceed 1500 hours per year.
  • Some overnight travel and frequent daytime travel will be required.
  • The working hours for this position are the core hours are daytime business hours.
  • Successful candidates must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and will undergo and must pass an intensive background investigation.
  • Successful candidates are required to live within the geographic assigned region.
