Title: Research Analyst - Summer Intern 2023

Hiring Range: Hourly Rate $20 to $28 Commensurate with Experience

Job Duties

•Researches Virginia General Assembly budget conference reports and other legislative documents from 1994 to 2022 to develop a history of VSP funding, personnel, programs, and reports.
•Researches reports from Commissions such as the Virginia State Crime Commission that had significant impact on new regulations impacting the performance and funding of VSP.
•Prepares a narrative history of budget changes, staffing levels, major policy and program changes, and reports to the Virginia General Assembly of enduring significance.
•Develops spreadsheets containing financial and personnel data in an easy-to-use format.
•Correlates this data to other relevant data such as population, highway miles, criminal/traffic incidents, and arrests.
•May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
•May be required to assist the Department or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Minimum Qualifications

•General knowledge and understanding of Virginia’s legislative process; of basic research methodology; and analytical techniques for conducting legislative and regulatory research.
•Skill in operating computers and using Microsoft Office applications, i.e., Word and Excel.
•Demonstrated ability to read and understand legislation and state government budget documents; to analyze and compile data and to write reports; to communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly orally and in writing in English; and to work independently and as a member of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Rising Juniors and Seniors pursuing a bachelor’s or higher-level degree in political science, public policy, public administration, or other relevant field of study preferred.
•Undergraduate or graduate level coursework involving research, writing, and data gathering preferred.
•Interest in Public Policy or Public Administration preferred.
