Job Description

The Center for Exercise Medicine Research (CEMR), a research center at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in Roanoke, VA, is dedicated to the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related disease. The Yan lab is currently employing advanced molecular genetics in mice and quantitative methods to conduct leading-edge research on the role of exercise in promotion of health and prevention of disease. We are looking for a Research Assistant to work primarily on NIH-funded research projects examining the impact of exercise on obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. The primary responsibility of this position is animal colony management, genotyping, some general laboratory operations, and provision of help for data collection for in vitro and in vivo research projects. The individual will also be responsible for operating equipment. The successful candidate should be detail oriented, keeping careful records of interactions with participants in a laboratory setting. The candidate should also be flexible and enjoy a fast-paced research environment.

Required Qualifications

• Basic lab experience including dilutions, weighing chemicals, and understand proper chemical handling
• Experience with lab equipment, such as centrifuge, pH meter, and balance
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
• Demonstrated communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to follow instructions
• Demonstrated skills in using computer software
• Demonstrated interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals in a diverse, multicultural environment, exercising judgement and high degree of confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications

• B.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field
• Experience with basic laboratory protocols including proper handling of subject specimens, data collection, participant recruitment, assessments, and data management.
