Job Description

The Virginia Household Water Quality Program (VAHWQP) is a Virginia Cooperative Extension program that is operated through the Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) department. VAHWQP provides confidential water testing and educates private water supply users (clientele) through drinking water clinics. Faculty in BSE, working with local VAHWQP-trained Virginia Cooperative Extension agents, coordinate drinking water clinics in at least 60 counties per year. The position described herein creates value by providing logistical and analytical support for VAHWQP and is critical to the day-to-day operation of VAHWQP.

Required Qualifications

Masters degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology or similar field or an exception can be made for a BS in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology or similar field with significant analytical laboratory experience. Experience with standard laboratory data QA/QC protocols and data management. Evidence of effective communication and teamwork skills. Demonstrated expertise with using applicable computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Visual Basic for Applications, and ESRI ArcGIS). Ability to coordinate lab sample chain of custody and travel logistics. Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record. To excel, the person in this position should be detail-oriented and willing to develop and share creative solutions to problems with VAHWQP clinic logistics and data management.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with ion chromatography and microbiological assessment techniques. Evidence of the application of good laboratory practices. Experience with instrument troubleshooting and maintenance. Experience with innovative database management and manipulation, specifically using Microsoft Access to store, compile and query data for the purpose of generating individual sample result reports and report interpretation material. Experience with using GIS software to analyze spatially disparate data to inform research and stakeholder information exchange.
