The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine, the laboratory of Dr. Manoj Patel, seeks applications for a motivated postdoctoral fellow. The laboratory’s research focuses on elucidation of mechanisms underlying epilepsy at the molecular, cellular and circuit level.
The post-doctoral fellow will attend to ongoing projects in the lab and be expected to develop their own research program within the overall goal of the laboratory: understanding the neurobiology of epilepsy syndromes of voltage-gated ion channel etiology (e.g., sodium and calcium channels).
Techniques used in the Patel Lab include both in vivo (EEG seizure detection) and in vitro (patch clamp) electrophysiology. The lab also uses optogenetic and chemogenetic methods to evaluate neural circuit recruitment during seizures, and has interest in the role of non-neuronal cells (e.g., glial and immune cells) in disease progression.
Exceptional candidates will bring their own skillset and knowledgebase that compliments these ongoing projects and interests. The successful candidate will be responsible for independent design and execution of experiments as well as data analysis, interpretation and communication of results. Additionally, they will also be expected to apply for extramural funding and aid in the laboratory’s endeavors to secure future research funding. The fellow will also have an opportunity to take part in the highly interactive neuroscience focused scientific community at the University of Virginia. The project is currently supported by two 5-year R01 research grants from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
