The Department of Biology, at the University of Virginia is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko. The individual will join a well-established research program aimed at understanding the control of plant secondary metabolism with a focus on leaf and floral trichome specific expression.
QUALIFICATIONS : This position requires that the candidate has completed a Ph.D. in plant biology, plant genetics/genomics, or a closely related field by the appointment start date. The candidate must have prior training and experience in basic molecular biology, gene expression analysis, transgene vector construction and plant transformation/ regeneration as evidenced in the applicant's published works. Anticipated responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
o Ability to perform genetic manipulation of genes and expression vectors and to perform transformation and regeneration of plants; expertise in plant cell culture a must.
o Ability to perform routine molecular biological experiments including DNA extractions, gPCR/RT-PCR, gene expression profiling with RNAseq technologies
o Ability to conduct basic microscopic and fluorescent microscopic analysis (for transgene tracking)
o LCMS and GCMS experience in measuring secondary metabolites highly desirable
o Prior experience with gene editing (CRSPR, TALEN, etc) methodologies highly desirable
o Ability to ability to maintain existing transgenic plants and seed inventory;
o Working understanding of basic bioinformatics and computational software
o Ability to provide supervision and training for graduate and undergraduate researchers
