  • The University of Virginia
The Kucenas Lab in the Department of Biology and Program in Fundamental Neuroscience at the University of Virginia has an open position for a post doctoral scholar to investigate the cellular and molecular mediators that govern glial tiling in developing and diseased nervous systems.

This position, fully supported by the Owens Family Foundation and the NIH, involves basic and translational research using zebrafish and we are seeking an enthusiastic, focused and creative candidate to join our team. You will be able to make a significant contribution to the ongoing research of the Kucenas Lab through the design and execution of experiments along with appropriate data analysis approaches. An essential part of the role is to disseminate findings by writing papers and presenting ongoing work at conferences and seminars. By working alongside PhD students, technical staff, and undergraduate students, you will also have opportunities to develop your mentoring and teaching skills. You will work within the Biology Department and Program in Fundamental Neuroscience, a supportive and collaborative collective of researchers using model organisms to address a broad range of neuroscience research questions.

We have strong links with colleagues across the university and have developed additional collaborative links for this project with labs within the School, as well as elsewhere in the US. Numerous opportunities for further training and career development are offered by the University of Virginia, all within one of the most beautiful cities on the east coast. In the Kucenas Lab, we build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching, and student experience and we do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. Our lab is located in Gilmer Hall at UVA in Charlottesville, Virginia and is within a 10-minute walk of the Medical Center, which provides exceptional opportunities for collaboration among basic and clinical scientists. Our scientific community is heavily invested in training, and we work hard to help trainees develop the skills necessary for successful independent careers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related discipline (i.e. Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, etc.) by the start date of this position. Candidates must have a strong motivation for and commitment to research in cellular, molecular, and developmental neuroscience. Prior experience working with zebrafish embryos, with strong experimental skills including zebrafish transgenesis, live imaging and quantitative image analysis approaches, are desirable. The ability to work independently is essential, while maintaining a strong team ethic with excellent communication skills. The post demands a flexible attitude and an ability to respond positively to the challenges faced in the research environment.
