The Department of Biology, at the University of Virginia is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko. The individual will join a well-established research program aimed at legume improvement through molecular breeding with an emphasis traits associated with climate resiliency, improved nutritive value, and disease and pest resistance. The main targets are cowpea and other orphan legume crops for marginal environments in sub-Saharan Africa. Prior training and experience in plant molecular breeding, development and application of molecular marker technologies (e.g., use of SNPs, GWAS, etc) and basic plant pathology are required.
QUALIFICATIONS : Completion of a Ph.D. in plant breeding, plant genetics or related field and clear demonstration of expertise in molecular breeding through published works by the start date.
Anticipated skills necessary would include, but are not limited to the following:
Ability to perform genetic crosses and develop new populations for selected traits; ability to maintain existing seed inventory
Ability to perform routine molecular biological experiments including DNA extractions, PCR and amplicon analysis, genotyping using SSR and allele-specific SNP markers
Working understanding of basic bioinformatics and computational software for single trait and QTL mapping in biparental and advanced intercross populations for key biotic and abiotic constraints (e.g., Infinium iSelect SNP arrays, GWAS or alternative genotyping methods)
Ability to understand basic aspects of plant pathology (understanding of parasitic weeds a plus)
Capacity to work with diverse research sectors in developing countries and participation in meeting the molecular breeding strategies in collaboration with West African Cowpea Consortium breeders
Provide supervision and training for visiting scholars
