The Sontheimer Lab, in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Scientist. This is an NIH supported position that will investigate the role of extracellular matrix/PNN in acquired epilepsies in a highly collaborative research group.

Sontheimer Lab at the University of Virginia provides an ideal place for doing research with cutting-edge technologies in neuroscience research. A group of more than 15 researchers from across the globe, who are at various career stages including undergraduates, graduates, medical, postdocs, and senior scientists with diverse backgrounds and expertise, provide a welcoming and growth-supportive environment. The state-of-the-art laboratory is equipped with multiple surgery suites, patch clamp electrophysiology rigs, live cell/tissue fluorescence imaging, confocal microscopy, cell/tissue culture, animal behavior and genetic manipulation facility, two-photon imaging of live mouse brain, 24x7 EEG and video monitoring facility to provide uninterrupted workflow in a fast-paced working environment.

Principle Investigator Dr. Sontheimer has a long-standing interest in the mechanisms and therapeutics of neurodegenerative diseases and acquired epilepsy with a current focus on the role of glial cells and extracellular matrix. Besides being a keen researcher, Dr. Sontheimer is a passionate educator and mentor who has trained numerous scientists and students in several disciplines of neuroscience research.

The project involves looking at the fundamental contribution and molecular mechanisms associated with the extracellular matrix (ECM) and perineuronal nets (PNNs) in the pathogenesis of acquired forms of epilepsy. Previous and ongoing studies from the laboratory show a complex presentation of ECM and PNNs in different models of epilepsy leading us to propose a multifaceted role of ECM and plausible interactions with neuron and glial cells in CNS diseases. Using a combination of techniques including but not limited to patch clamp electrophysiology, newly developed advanced EEG probe, confocal microscopy, and genetic manipulations, the candidate will perform experiments, analyze and present data, and oversee the daily operations related to the project and report PI on regular basis.

The following expertise is desirable:
  • Experience in EEG and/or EMG
  • Slice or single-cell electrophysiology
  • Small animal surgery
  • Mouse handling
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Confocal microscopy
  • Western blotting

While the position is supported by grants to Dr. Sontheimer, the nature of the position will allow for considerable independence and growth including submission of independent grants. The individual will work closely with a range of trainees including undergraduates graduates and postdocs.

Competitive salary exceeding NIH guidelines will be offered.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. in neurobiology, neuroscience, physics, engineering or similar fields.

3+ years postdoctoral experience

The candidate is expected to have a successful research record as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
