Job Description:
Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.

1. Provide online academic assistance to assigned tutees in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics and related subjects either in a group or individually.
2. Meet with instructors of the targeted courses on a regular basis to ensure coordinated academic assistance.
3. Lead one or two study groups weekly.
4. Become CRLA certified and attend periodic training sessions to increase competency in working with students.
5. Be responsible for maintaining records on each student who is being tutored including attendance, periodic assessment, and progress.
6. Provide evaluations and other reports as requested by the Coordinator of the Tutoring Center.
7. Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
8. Help students develop self-confidence, raise self-concept, and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
9. Help students develop a high level of motivation in academic areas.
10. Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.
11. Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
12. Establish and maintain rapport with the assigned student(s).
13. Serve as a role model for students being served.
14. Mentor new tutors if so directed by the Tutor Coordinator.
15. Promote the tutoring program to students and the College.
16. Be willing to meet with students online as needed.
17. Be familiar with Zoom and other online platforms for delivery of online tutoring.
18. Be willing to receive training relevant to online tutoring.



Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and/or Recommendation from Faculty
• Knowledge of Zoom and other online platforms for delivery of online tutoring
• Knowledge of relevant subject matter
• Skill of providing online academic assistance to assigned tutees in the areas of English composition, literature and similar courses either in a group or individually.
• Skill at helping students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying
• Skill of helping students develop self-confidence, raising self-concept, and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
• Skill at helping students develop a high level of motivation in academic areas.
• Skill at assisting students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.
• Skill of helping students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
• Skill establishing and maintaining rapport with the assigned student(s).
• Ability to meet with instructors of the targeted courses on a regular basis to ensure coordinated academic assistance.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in a field of Science.
• Teaching Certificate.
• One year of professional teaching or tutoring experience.
• Email and Internet skills.
• Daily access to the internet.
