The Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) and the Center on Education Policy and Workforce Competitiveness (EdPolicyWorks) in the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) at the University of Virginia seeks a Senior Data Systems Specialist to provide sophisticated data management and analysis to support faculty, staff and students engaged in research-practice-policy partnerships with State agencies and educational organizations across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Faculty at SEHD have developed a set of partnership initiatives related to statewide early childhood, K-12, and higher education. This Senior Data Systems Specialist will lead the development of cross-initiative analytic databases and implement internal procedures for data sharing and utilization for research purposes. This position is available either for remote work or in person and has an immediate start date. This position is an initial 12-month appointment with the option to renew for a second year, contingent on satisfactory performance and continued availability of funding.
Role and Responsibilities:
Develop systems to create and house cross-initiative datasets in preparation for analysis
Develop data dictionaries and other documentation for cross-initiative datasets
Design and implement internal procedures for data requests, sharing and utilization to facilitate research
Track data use for research purposes to reduce redundancy
Understand RUDA agreements and consult to ensure consistency across existing and new initiatives
Develop protocol for obtaining, maintaining, and tracking IRB protocols to conduct research
Coordinate with faculty and data specialists who are involved with the core function of data integration and data analysis
Required Skills:
Bachelor’s degree and six years of relevant experience; or
Master’s degree and two years of relevant experience
Preferred Skills
Significant preference will be given to those candidates who meet some or all preferred qualifications. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a cover letter detailing how their experience and qualifications align with the following:
Degree in data science, education, psychology, public policy, or related field
For candidates with a bachelor’s degree, at least 8 years of relevant experience or Master’s degree with at least 4 years of relevant post-degree experience (e.g., database management, data analysis, data documentation).
Experience drafting data agreements
Experience working with education data
Excellent communication skills
Strong collaboration skills
Ability to work with multiple PI’s and members of their teams
Ability to manage multiple tasks with accelerated deadlines
Proficiency in one or more analytic programming language (e.g., R, Stata, SPSS)
Demonstrated ability to present complex data across a wide range of stakeholders
