The College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia seeks a Senior Director of Sponsored Research and Development Administration to join their team. The inaugural Senior Director of Sponsored Research and Development Administration will manage the pre-award and post-award activities for Arts and Sciences. In addition, the senior director provides strategic guidance to faculty regarding funding opportunities and connects to the appropriate resources at the university for proposal support and development. Arts and Sciences has a large, complex, and diverse sponsored research and development portfolio. The Senior director will serve as the primary interface with the UVA Office of Sponsored Programs, foundations, and supervises the Pre- and Post-award staff in the school. The senior director works with the research and development administration as well UVA OSP to interpret regulations, agreements, and guidelines related to external funding. The senior director has signatory authority for the university and approves and submits all Arts and Sciences led proposals, as well as post award actions.

  • Reports to the Associate Dean for Research
  • Facilitate proposal preparation for large, complex partnerships and opportunities.
  • Provide guidance to faculty on funding opportunities and potential sponsors that span the breadth of Arts and Sciences’ research areas.
  • Identify and support partnerships with both internal and external organizations (regionally, nationally, and internationally) in seeking funding opportunities.
  • Participate in internal or external audits of school grants, contracts, and agreements.
  • Advise faculty and school leadership regarding grants, contracts and agreements’ interpretation, guidelines, and policies.
  • Clarify, interpret, and disseminate information related to sponsored programs to colleagues with varying knowledge and experience related to grants and development programs.
  • Serve as Arts and Sciences’ representative on relevant committees
  • Manage personnel actions including hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules for direct reports. Guide personnel management for secondary reports.
  • Supervise the review of all budgets and administrative aspects of proposals prior to submission.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Candidate Profile

Although the University will consider a range of profile, expressions of interest are sought from candidates possessing the following:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree and at least ten years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and strategic planning related to academic research and scholarship.
  • Ability to effectively articulate the school’s research mission and programs.
  • Ability to effectively communicate expertise and experience related to research funding for internal engagement.
  • Excellent understanding of government funding agencies/resources appropriate to the span of research conducted at UVA Arts and Sciences.
  • Excellent knowledge of Uniform Guidance and other guidelines related to sponsored research.
  • Ability to initiate, cultivate, and strengthen relationships related to research and scholarship with various stakeholders, including with potential funders and potential internal and external research collaborators.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and coordination skills.
  • Microsoft Office Suite experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in an Arts and Sciences related field.
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification preferred.
  • Specific experience related to research and development administration.
  • Demonstrated engagement with/expertise related to a portfolio of funding agencies and research partners, including those in the Mellon, National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy and/or the corporate sector.
  • Salesforce, Juice, Dimensions, Pivot, and/or GrantForward experience.
