Job Duties


The Virginia Department of Health Profession's (DHP) mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.

This sworn position enforces the rules and regulations of the Department's 13 health regulatory boards as well as all associated Virginia statutes and federal laws. Principal duties include independently investigating a variety of complaints of alleged violations against facilities and health care practitioners licensed, certified, registered, or permitted and applicants for licensure by the Department, and by submitting reports which clearly reflect investigative results in order to safeguard the lives, health, and safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth.

Healthcare licensees with investigative experience are encouraged to apply and to fully describe their investigative role(s) and experience in the application materials submitted.

This is a wage (hourly) position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours during the 12 month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

This position has location requirements as listed below.

Must be willing to perform mobile work and to maintain a remote office with high speed Internet access, within assigned district(s) or within a 30-mile radius of region border(s) as a condition of employment.

The districts for this position are:
Region III, District 1
Counties of Greensville, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Surry, and Sussex; and the independent cities of Emporia, Franklin, and Suffolk.

Region III, District 2
Counties of Charles City, New Kent, Gloucester, James City, and York; and the independent cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg.

Minimum Qualifications

*Comprehensive investigative (including case management) skills and abilities as demonstrated by concurrently managing multiple and varied types of complex investigations.
*Comprehensive knowledge, skills, and abilities related to investigative techniques, to include interviewing, data collection and analysis of complex records and reports.
*Considerable, demonstrated ability to:
- interpret and apply laws and regulations
- effectively and independently organize and manage time and assignments;
- compose clear, comprehensive, and concise investigative reports;
-work as member of a team;
-communicate effectively both orally and in writing with impartiality, objectivity, and confidentiality; and
-work effectively with and through others.
*Considerable, effective interpersonal skills and self-direction.
*Skill in the use of a personal computer with standard office software for report writing, information exchange, online research, and database management (to include electronic file management and queries).
*Must be able to travel, including some overnight travel, to areas within the region in an efficient time frame based upon typical travel times and sensitivity of assignment; and to use a privately-owned vehicle when necessary.

Additional Considerations

*Recent, progressive experience conducting investigations.

*Current work experience as a health care practitioner and/or current, formal work experience independently conducting various types of healthcare investigations, including but not limited to fraud; risk management; quality assurance; background checks; client/patient abuse; or criminal, civil and/or regulatory investigations involving healthcare practice.

*A working knowledge of health care/medical terminology in order to interpret health care records and communicate with health care professionals, and of federal or state health care laws and regulations.

*Prior experience working with administrative law.
