The Senior Writer will be an experienced professional who will help UVA Health achieve its fundraising goals by conceptualizing, writing and editing a variety of engaging content that excites readers and inspires philanthropic support. They will create successful major and principal gift-level proposals in partnership with teams across Health Development. They will craft compelling stories that make science and complex concepts understandable and exciting for lay audiences and present a clear case for support. They will also create persuasive fundraising proposal templates, donor stories, case statements, video scripts, and other relevant content.

The Senior Writer will also produce content for our philanthropy magazines/e-newsletters, PULSE and Investing in Hope , as well as Medicine in Motion from the School of Medicine. With guidance from the Senior Director and collaboration with other HD Communications team members, they will write and edit content, coordinate photography, and collaborate on the graphic design and digital placement. In addition, they will work closely with the team on campaign messaging and case development and will serve as a strategic resource for defined teams across the development office.

Principal/Major Gifts Writer: 20%

• In partnership with teams across the office, gather content, manage, and write proposals at the $1 million+ level. They will also edit and provide guidance and support for proposals at lower levels.

• Collaborate on the development of proposal templates, including evergreen content that development officers can use on their own for campaign priorities

• Provide strategic campaign communications support to the Senior Director of Communications by helping create campaign materials, including case statements, white papers, inserts, and other pieces as necessary

• Provide communications strategy and support for assigned areas/programs.

Content Writer for Digital and Print Publications: 40%

• Work with the Senior Director and team to produce PULSE and Investing in Hope -the campaign e-newsletters/print publications, as well write content for Medicine in Motion. Work with the printing company to ensure high-quality production.

• Collaborate on strategy, story lists, and production schedules. Manage freelance designers, videographers and photographers when necessary

• Upload content to the HSD website and work with the printing company to ensure high-quality publications for donors and prospects

• Work closely with the Assistant Director to produce creative online versions of the newsletters

• Coordinate content for weekly news roundup - In Case You Missed It

Digital and other writing: 20%

• Develop/edit video scripts for various digital campaign initiatives

• Work closely with the Healthcare Philanthropy team to write and develop content supporting a philanthropy culture with providers/clinicians.

• Review and repurpose/edit content from other Health System publications for web use while ensuring that all permissions and procedures are followed

• Collaborate with other communications teams across grounds to incorporate content into various university channels

• Work with Senior Director to develop case materials, messaging and themes for campaign initiatives

• Draft speaking points for leadership


• Collaborate with the Communications team on developing submission forms and project management processes.

• Work with the team on developing and maintaining a calendar of work

COVID Vaccination Requirement

The University of Virginia expects all current and new employees (UVA Health System and Academic), to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

If hired to work on the Academic side of the University, excluding the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UPG, and the Health Systems Library, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to submit to mandatory, weekly prevalence testing. Employees that are working 100% remotely will not be subject to weekly prevalence testing; however, if the employee works on UVA Grounds (including the Medical Center) even intermittently, then they are required to be tested for COVID-19 once per week on an indefinite basis and follow masking mandates.

In addition to having proof of a Covid vaccination, hired employees are required to have Proof of Measles immunity, Mumps & Rubella immunity, Tdap, Flu annually, Chicken Pox immunity.”

This is a remote-eligible position, preference will be given to applicants in similar time zones.

Education: Bachelor's degree in related field. Master's degree preferred.
Experience: At least five years of experience


This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
