Job Description:

The Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth and strengthen families and communities across the Commonwealth.

DJJ's Division of Education is seeking skilled Special Education Teachers to provide quality educational programming and services through sound instruction to meet the needs of students; will develop and ensure the provisions of the Individual Education Program (IEP) are being implemented for special education students; and will comply with standard defined under the Commonwealth’s statues and program certification requirements.

The teacher will select and provide research based Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), foster a safe, respectful, and student-centered learning environment, and use student data to inform instruction, monitor progress, and promote academic success

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
1) Earned a bachelor’s degree or post graduate degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in Special Education; or 2) Earned a bachelor’s degree and be eligible for a Provisional (Special Education) License

Licensure:
Must possess a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License endorsed in Special Education Gen. Curriculum K-12 or one or more areas of Special Educational Education.

Additional Considerations

Experience as a Special Education teacher in a secondary setting preferred; Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred. Knowledge of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Regulations Governing Special Education Programs in Virginia; Experience developing Individual Education Program (IEP) plans; ability to maintain accurate records; and familiar with data collection methods and implementation.

Applicants interested in this position should submit a copy of their Virginia teaching license (if currently licensed), college transcripts, and applicable test scores. Applicants seeking a provisional license in special education should be aware that licensure requirements are based on Virginia Department of Education regulations.

The Provisional (Special Education) License is a nonrenewable teaching license issued for a validity period not to exceed three years. To be issued the Provisional (Special Education) License the individual shall:
1) Be employed by a Virginia public or accredited nonpublic school as a special education teacher and have the recommendation of the employing educational agency;
2) Have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;
3)Have an assigned mentor with an active Virginia Teaching licensed in endorsed in Special Education; and
4) Have a planned program of study in the assigned endorsement area, make progress toward meeting the endorsement requirement each of the three years of the license, and have completed at least 3 semester hours of coursework in competencies of foundations for educating students with disabilities and have an understanding and application of the legal aspects and regulatory requirements associated with identification, education, and evaluation of students with disabilities (a survey course integrating these competencies would satisfy this requirement).
