Job Duties
The Special Projects Coordinator (SPC) works directly for the Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction. As such, this person will be involved in all day-to-day activities of the Superintendent which covers all K-12 and early childhood content areas in the Virginia Department of Education and other areas as assigned. This position will deploy professional expertise, strategies, and innovation to assist the Superintendent in her duties. This will include working with all VDOE staff, members of the Governor’s administration, the General Assembly, the Virginia Board of Education, other state agencies, business and industry, families, all early childhood providers overseen by VDOE, and Virginia’s 131 school divisions and related associations and networks. As such this position will also support all activities funded by the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG).
The SPC will assist the Superintendent in meeting the long-term goals of improving child and student pathways and outcomes, align the VDOE’s work with the mission of the organization, and provide meaningful input on a range of policy and communications issues and any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or her designee.
Minimum Qualifications
● Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships;
● Ability to research, assess, develop, and implement strategic educational initiatives;
● Ability to project manage and assist in administrative responsibilities of the State Superintendent;
● Provide policy and strategic advice relating to Virginia’s K-12 public school system and early childhood providers;
● Demonstrated ability for visionary thinking, novel solutions, and exemplary analytical abilities;
● Able to successfully manage multiple priorities in short time frames;
● Demonstrated high-level interpersonal and organizational skills;
● Strong research and writing skills, plus computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Access;
● Strong time management skills; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college/university with studies in Political Science, Education, or Business Administration (preferred)
Graduation from an accredited/college university with studies related to the job description or an equivalent combination of education and direct working experience.
Experience in education policy or teaching preferred.
