VCU’s School of Medicine is seeking an experienced and highly motivated professional to fill the Senior HR Administrator position supporting the Department of Surgery. The Department of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University is a leading academic and clinical division within the VCU School of Medicine. It is home to 11 specialist divisions, four residency programs and seven fellowship programs. The department is dedicated to providing exceptional care to patients while advancing medical research, education, and training in the field of surgery. With a focus on cutting-edge research, innovative treatments, and high-quality patient care, the Department of Surgery encompasses multiple specialties, including general surgery, surgical oncology, trauma, and transplant surgery, among others. Summary:

The Senior HR Administrator will act as a strategic partner to the Department of Surgery’s leadership team, providing expert guidance utilizing both VCU and VCU Health/MCVP policies and processes across a range of HR functions including talent management, employee relations, performance management, compensation, and compliance. Additionally, this role will support key HR operations such as employee onboarding, benefits and leave administration, payroll/timekeeping, and terminations.

The Senior HR Administrator will be responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating HR-related projects within the department, serving as the subject matter expert on all HR policies and procedures. This position is crucial in ensuring that HR initiatives align with departmental goals, drive employee engagement, and foster a motivated, high-performing workforce.

Working closely with department leadership, the Senior HR Administrator will help implement HR best practices, promote a culture of inclusion, and support organizational success. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and communication skills, a deep understanding of HR best practices, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Typical Duties

Human Resources Management and Administration:
• Collaborate with Department of Surgery leadership to design and execute HR strategies
aligned with the department’s academic, clinical, and research objectives.
• Provide guidance on complex HR issues, including talent management, employee relations,
retention, and workforce planning.
• Manage faculty affairs for the department.
• Oversee the day-to-day HR functions for the department, in a timely and accurate manner,
and in accordance with University and Health System policies and procedures
• Serve as subject matter expert and internal resource for HR policy and procedures for staff
and faculty, including recruitment, hiring/onboarding, performance management, process
improvement, benefits/leaves, compensation, employee relations, payroll/timekeeping and
terminations
• Collaborate with department leadership to initiate and complete recruitment process in recruitment management system
• Apply knowledge of administrative policies and procedures, federal and state laws and policies, rules, regulations for Human Resources
• Responsible for maintaining and communicating with department staff and faculty the HR policies with respect to leaves, recruiting, compensation, etc.
• Oversee departmental compliance with HR policy and procedure and other department level HR initiatives
• Maintain all records, processing needs and changes for staff and faculty, including PAF changes
• Attend all required training sessions/meetings to include HR partners
• Update Department Chair, Administrator, and Financial Manager of all HR related activities and policy/procedural changes
• Create and updates policies and procedures as they relate to staff human resources activities and management
• Counsel and guide Department leadership and other supervisors with HR related matters to include disciplinary procedures, recruitment, hiring, and staff development
• Coordinate all VCUHS HR efforts and processes for the Department
• Provide training to all staff and faculty for VCU and VCUHS initiatives, updates, and policy/procedure changes

Other Duties as Assigned:
• Participates in special projects as identified in support of the School of Medicine, and VCU’s new Great Place policy and service delivery model
• Provides back-up support for the SOM HR team
