Job Duties
The Department of General Services, Division of Engineering and Buildings (DEB), is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code as it relates to buildings on state property, for developing state policies and procedures on the procurement of professional and construction services and for establishing accessibility standards for state owned buildings.
We are seeking a qualified licensed Architect to perform all tasks related to Architectural Review of building construction plans and specifications and inspection of construction.
Multiple positions may be filled from this vacancy.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or equivalent combination of training and experience required. A Virginia Architect’s license (or capable of obtaining one within six months) is required. A valid Virginia driver’s license is required, or to be obtained within 60 days of hire. Successful candidate must have ability to meet occasional job-related travel requirements. Knowledge and experience in the design and construction of new and renovated buildings. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of the Virginia Uniform State Building Code (VUSBC), the ADA technical standards, and state regulations. Experience in professional practice involving project design and preparation of construction documents, coordination with engineering disciplines, controlling project costs, and inspecting construction in progress. Ability to: work independently under general supervision, to prioritize and schedule normal workload and special deadlines, to communicate effectively orally and in writing in preparation of oral and written reports to management and clients using word processing software. Communicate in a professional, fair and cooperative manner with work associates and clients, demonstrating good interpersonal skills and personal discipline.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Architecture is preferred.
Current ICC certification as a Building Plans Examiner and Commercial Building Inspector is preferred; applicant must achieve these certifications within 6 months of hire.
BlueBeam software experience preferred for review of documents.

Occasional on-site visits to construction sites, which include walking over rough terrain outdoors in extreme heat and cold and in noisy environments. The employee is required to stand, climb, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Employee must use hands to hold, handle, grasp, pinch, or feel. Required to wear personal safety protective equipment, including safety helmet and safety glasses. Employee must lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
The selected candidate will be required to complete a Statement of Economic Interests upon hire. This position is designated as sensitive and a fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate. This position requires driving and a DMV check will be required by the final candidate.
