General Description: As a part of Northern Virginia Community College’s STEM program, NOVA SySTEMic, the STEM Support Specialist will support programs such as summer camps, workshops, robotics competitions and STEM EXPOs as well as other STEM programs that NOVA participates in.
Duties and Tasks: The STEM Support Specialist will be responsible for assigned events which may include:
Communications with host organization
Assist with developing an activity
Packing a vehicle or trailer with equipment
Transporting equipment in a large panel truck or trailer in tow
Unloading and setting up of activity
Exhibiting and speaking with participants, or maintaining and replacing equipment as assigned
Events are during the day and often in the evening and on weekends
Setting up available resources
Providing basic technical assistance/guidance and instruction to clients individually and/or in groups
Maintaining records and reports on program planning and equipment condition
Presenting written presentations to staff, advisory groups and others
Providing assistance to a wide range of educational programs
Essential Functions:
Applies knowledge of basic principles and applications of the assigned program area.
Coordinates activities, such as summer STEM camps, career exploration opportunities, community EXPOs, and workshops for on-site programs.
Frequent contact with general public, program personnel, agencies and organizations within assigned geographic area(s) and targeted program audiences to explain services and provide and obtain information.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required KSAs:
Excellent communication and partner relation skills
Good knowledge and understanding of computer, technical and STEM skills in an educational setting
Good presentation and strong organizational skills
Ability to organize software files and physical equipment
Ability to lift above 50lbs in weight
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's degree (or higher); or an equivalent combination of training and education.
Valid driver’s license.
Some experience in STEM activities.
Some experience with Microsoft Office software.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (or higher); or an equivalent combination of training and education.
Code and robotics experience,
IT and microelectronic or fabrication knowledge and experience.
Ability and/or willingness to train to drive a large delivery truck or an SUV/Truck with a 16’ hook up and tow trailer.
Some experience with STEM competitions and planning STEM events.
