Job Description
The Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering seeks a motivated and talented Systems Administrator. This position will be responsible for providing general IT related support to AOE faculty, staff, and students and provide excellent customer support. The Systems Administrator will maintain and support operating systems, including Linux, Windows and Mac. The position will manage technology and computers in ASDI (AOE Studio for Design and Innovation), graduate research labs, and other conference rooms; purchase equipment and computers; surplus computers and other items when needed; serve as backup support for the department's Senior Systems Administrator. The Systems Admin will coordinate annual computer inventory and oversee/ensure compliance of Home Use Forms for the department. This position will also utilize Ensemble or other Content Management System (CMS) to ensure the AOE website is functioning properly at all times.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
Experience with Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems
Experience with Office Products, Google
Experience installing, operating, and troubleshooting computer hardware and software
Experience with Content Management System (i.e. Ensemble) and handing back-end code for webpages
Demonstrated ability to interface with end users over zoom, phone, email or in person to communicate problem status and resolutions in an effective way
Experience with Zoom or other video teleconferencing products and other audiovisual equipment
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with advanced system administration tools (Microsoft MDT, PowerShell, etc.);
Experience in an Active Directory domain environment (Group Policy, managing security groups, etc.)
Knowledge of BigFix, Banner, HokieMart, Windows Defender for Endpoints, and specifying hardware for high performance computers.
Previous experience in a customer service environment
Experience in technical writing such as user guides and knowledge base
Experience working with a command-line interface, preferably Linux
Interest in learning new technical concepts
